Urban Jewelry of the Month – Amethyst Gemstone

We’re starting “Urban Jewelry of the Month” with gemstone jewelry.

February is the month of amethyst. Amethyst is the stone of St. Valentine and of faithful lovers because St. Valentine was thought to have worn an Amethyst ring engraved with the image of Cupid. It is also referred to as the “couple’s stone” and gives meaning to relationships that over time, transcends the carnal union and gives way to deeper connection and a more soulful communion. Wear as an engagement or eternity ring for fidelity, or as a locket to call back lost love.

The beauty of Amethyst and its low price make this an excellent stone for any occasion. There are a lot of fun stories related to Amethyst we like to share. Here we go!

Amethyst crystals and stones are very powerful, most stones are only focused on a single aspect. However the metaphysical properties of amethyst are focused on several different fields.

Purple Amethyst has been highly esteemed throughout the ages for its stunning beauty and legendary powers to stimulate, and soothe, the mind and emotions. It is a semi-precious stone in today’s classifications, but to the ancients it was a “Gem of Fire,” a Precious Stone worth, at times in history, as much as a diamond. It has always been associated with February, the month the Romans dedicated to Neptune, their water-god, and is the traditional birthstone of that month. It is the stone of St. Valentine and faithful love, and signifies ecclesiastical dignity as the Bishop’s Stone. It carries the energy of fire and passion, creativity and spirituality, yet bears the logic of temperance and sobriety.

1. Calming

By wearing or using Amethyst crystals, you can become more in tune with your own feelings and get to know your inner self on a much deeper level. It is a gemstone which can bring you calmness, inner peace and is thought to heighten your natural intuition. These beautiful crystals are also known for bringing clarity of the mind to the owner.

Amethyst is an excellent stone for diplomats, negotiators and business people. It calms angry temperaments and gives a distinct advantage in situations where debating is required. Wear or hold Amethyst to control evil thoughts, increase intelligence and render men shrewd in business matters. It is also very good for overworked, overstressed, or overwhelmed metal states because of it extreme calming mental effects.

2. Protection

Amethyst is very well known — as from the ancients — as a sobriety stone. It is most notably protection from addiction. In fact the name amethyst itself comes from the Ancient Greek words a- (not) and methustos (intoxicated). It has been used for millenia to prevent drunkenness, and as a luck and prosperity crystal, it is used to assist in reducing the addictions to overspending, alcohol, gambling, unwise investments, drugs, smoking, etc, and destructive compulsive behaviors of all kinds. Wearing it offers protection from poison and hostile spells as well.

Amethyst is not only a psychic protection stone, but is also used to protect one from thieves, and to protects travelers. For travelers it was worn as a protection from treachery and surprise attacks, kept soldiers from harm and gave them victory over their enemies. It lent assistance to hunters in the capture of wild beasts and fowl, and was considered to be a powerful psychic stone of protection against witchcraft and black magic. Like other royal stones it protected its wearer from disease and contagion.

3. Spiritual

Amethyst is considered an extremely spiritual stone. In the Old Testament, it is written that Aaron, the Jewish High Priest, wore the amethyst in the center of his breastplate, and it was said to induce visions and revelations. Amethyst stones symbolize chastity, piety and trust. It became the gemstone of the Catholic Church and even today many bishops and cardinals wear it.

Amethyst provided a connection to the Divine in the spiritual world. To the Hebrews, it was Ahlamah, the ninth stone in the breastplate of the High Priest, engraved with the tribe of Dan, as well as the twelfth foundation stone for the New Jerusalem. To the Egyptians, it was Hemag, listed in the Book of the Dead to be carved into heart-shaped amulets for burial. In Eastern cultures, it was listed in descriptions of sacred “gem-cities,” “trees of life,” and used in temple offerings for worship, and to align planetary and astrological influences. It was popular in rosaries and prayer beads, credited with creating an atmosphere of pious calm, imbuing a sense of mental peace and quietude.

Amethyst stimulates the Third Eye, Crown and Etheric Chakras enhancing cognitive perception as well as accelerating the development of intuitive and psychic ability. It initiates wisdom and greater understanding.

4. Healing

The healing properties of amethyst mostly deal with the blood and breathing. Amethyst cleanses the blood, which helps with substance abuse and fevers. While breathing is helped by the calming effect of this gemstone. To get the most effect out of your amethyst stone or crystal it should be placed in the sun. Direct sunlight is best, be aware however that it can soften the purple color.

Emotionally, amethyst is used in crystal healing and comfort to help heal personal losses and grief, bringing one gently past. Amethyst has a gently sedative energy that ca promote peacefulness, happiness, and contentment. It also is said to bring emotional stability and inner strength. This stability and strength not only helps one hold firm in one’s life, but it can enhance flexibility and cooperation. To be flexible at need is a sure sign of strength.

There are many myths surrounding the amethyst, most of which attribute certain powers to the stone.  The Greeks and Romans would make mugs from an amethyst cluster believing it would prevent them from becoming drunk.

Another legend has it that the amethyst would protect the wearer from harm, but only if they showed bravery. This made amethysts a very popular stone for soldiers. This meaning of amethyst has faded with time and nowadays the protection it offers is on a spiritual and psychological level, rather than physical protection.

In ancient times the amethyst was associated with the Hebrew religion as a symbol of the Spirit of God. The breastplate of Aaron, the Jewish high priest, had 12 different gemstones on it, the basis of today’s birthstones. At the center was the amethyst which gave him revelations and spiritual visions.

More recently, during the Renaissance, the meaning changed once again. This time to humility and modesty. Royalty was especially enamored with this and some of the most prized pieces of jewelry from that era are adorned with amethysts. Usually in combination with other traditional gemstones such as rubies and diamonds.
